History of London City Airport
The airport was first proposed in 1981 by the newly formed London Docklands Development Corporation. However construction didn’t begin until 1986 when the HRH, The Prince of Wales laid the first stone of the terminal building. London City Airport was officially opened by HM, The Queen in November 1987.
In 1991 the Secretary of State approved further development plans for the airport to extend the runway, but passenger numbers fell in that year probably due to the Gulf War. In 1992 the Princess of Wales attended the airport to officiate at its re-launch and to unveil the extended runway. The airport continued to grow and by the end of 1995, the numbers of passengers passing through it had reached over 555,000.
Further developments have continued to the airport into the new millennium which include a covered dock edge walkway, a terminal business centre refurbishment and the Jubilee Line opening to passengers. In 2002 the airport celebrated its fifteenth birthday and its 10 millionth passenger and it continues to develop as an important London gateway for air travellers.
